Youth Ski Programs

Walden Cross Country Fitness Club offers youth programs designed by our National Sport Organization (Cross Country Canada) and offered through our Provincal Sport Organiziation (Cross Country Ontario) to excite children and families into our sport. Our programs are designed to follow the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Model, which has been developed to assist children in the development of a love of the outdoors, a healthy lifestyle, excellent technical skills and a good level of physical fitness within a sport environment.

Bunnyrabbits

The Bunny Program is a Cross Country Canada Skill development program. It follows the ‘Active Start’ LTAD level and is designed to introduce children five years of age and younger to the sport of cross country skiing and the healthy lifestyle associated with it. (one parent is required to be with their child during the session).

Jackrabbits

The Jackrabbit Program, which is directed at skiers in the “FUNdamentals” stage of development (children six to nine years of age), is the second level of the new LTAD program. It has been developed in parallel with the second level of the competency-based National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), which provides coaching materials specific to the needs of skiers this age. Program materials include an enrolment kit, an age appropriate booklet that provides a comprehensive record of the young skier’s ski career and “technique” and “program” award stickers to chart the different levels of achievement. The objective is for children to learn basic cross-country ski skills (both classic and skating) and to instill a lifelong interest in the sport, thereby enhancing their quality of life and health. Once the skiers have completed Level 4 of the Jackrabbit program (usually by 9 years old) they will be invited to join the Junior Development (JD) group to start training in the fall.
